Family photography: Family photographs are the best memoirs for a lifetime! If it’s anything that’s valued by time besides wine—it’s a family photograph! A family photograph freezes the most precious moments of our lives and gives us a chance to rediscover them at a later point. It’s for the same reason we should take utmost care while snapping the very precious moments—say, a growing kid, birthday, wedding, vacations, intimate moments so on and so forth. Personally being a connoisseur of photography, I collected some of the best family photographs from across the world. These could stand as a benchmark for your family photographs or provide you the cues of how an outstanding family photograph should be. So, here I present those outstanding family photographs—feast your eyes!

    How cute. :P

  2. Andrea Burke

Where are people of color? NO DIVERSITY at all…how disappointing!

  3. Andrea Burke

Where are the people of color?

  4. Mrs. McS

People are far too sensitive! Love these pictures!

  5. Lex

Agreed with Laura, little diversity… a lot of bad facial expressions… as a professional… some of these are mediocre at best.

  6. Brent Schmider

Whatever happend to “Contrast” these are just ok for me, but they all sem to be borderline washed out. I like color and contrast with definition.

  7. Lyn

love the pics! diversity? you people need to get a life, get out and get some fresh air, take a deep breath!

  8. Chanelle C

Seriously people? You’re complaining about no diversity? Why is it so difficult for you to look at these photos for inspiration for your own family photos rather than pick apart the people in them? My family consists of people from several different origins and I myself am the product of a Persian immigrant and a white American. Somehow I was raised to ignore skin color and ignore those people that care about skin color. I do not get why so many people look at articles and complain about lack of diversity. It wouldn’t even be something that crossed my mind when putting together or reading a peice like this. I look at the photos that were well taken, check out the different types of backgrounds, and note the different clothing styles/colors and get ideas together for my own family photos. Color of skin doesn’t matter to me. I guess that’s because I see people as people and not colors and races.

  9. s Davison

Amen, Chanelle. Diversity shouldn’t even be an issue anymore.

  10. Divyansh

Wao nice family pics i love the family pic because i know the value of these pic.

  11. sandi d

Diverse?! Families with 4,5, and 6 kids. Where did they find these people?! That is NOT something you see every day. Especially in upscale white neighborhoods.

  12. Annie O.

    Utah, perhaps?

  13. Tammy N.

I love each and every one of these pictures. Very talented photographers. Wonderful job!!

  14. Ashley

Very beautiful! Loved each and every one! I am a professional however i am always looking for ideas on what to wear for my own family shots. Thank you so much for the ideas! I do believe I saw some mixed families in there, I know I saw one that looked like they adopted a baby…

  15. Rev. Dr. Charles D. Good, D.D.

I couldn’t agree more with Chanelle C. I grew up in the military, and have been all over the world. I grew up not seeing color of skin, but rather seeing diversity. If you were to really know these people, they are not all the “Prep” that you think they are. Family, whether it includes multiple children or not, whether it includes adopted children from all over the world, or whatever the makeup of the God intended family, (one man and one women) is exactly what is beautiful to see. When you get older and you need help with life, you will be thankful you have children who love you. A return to Family values is what is going to save our nation.

  16. Sandy

Awesome pics! I agree Chanelle. I came from a large family and also have a large one that is growning fast, it’s fun to see different ways to do our pictures! Great ideas! And yes I do come from Utah!

  17. Liz

Out of 50 portraits, not one black family. Well I’ll be darn.

  18. Pam

Diversity is always nice to see . . . plain vanilla can be boring, but is it possible that wherever she may live in the country, the opportunity for diversity just may not be present. If, for example, she lives in a somewhat rural area, that may be her only clientele.

  19. Julia

All of these images are clearly over-photoshopped, and I think that’s what bothers me the most. Also, many of the poses are awkward…customers usually don’t like to see themselves standing straight on in a row. I’d like to see more creativity and props! And the one with the lamp sticking out of the guy’s head…big no no.

  20. amanda

All of you are talking about diversity and if you see about the 20th pic down there’s a whit family with a black baby! I also saw a Hispanic in another picture…these photos are good! Stop complaing about the people and look for ideas within the picture

  21. Sarah

I have come to the conclusion that people will complain about anything they can just because they are unhappy with their own lives. Instead of judging the photographer about not having any black families photographed, think about the fact that a black family would actually have to contact the photographer to take their picture. Don’t know too many photographers that are going to walk around and look for a black family to take pictures of just so that ignorant people do not have something to complain about. Do you just sit and surf the internet and look for things to judge people on? Take a step back and worry about yourself instead of a person you don’t even know.

  22. Chelsea

The lamp is a nice touch, clearly separated by his hand on the couch. I think that it is important to understand that beautiful images can come from right inside of people’s homes. Who wants to re-arrange furniture for a photo shoot? Sometimes you just have to accept that photographs are about the memory. So what if there’s a lamp.

And, really people- no diversity? It’s not a post called “Be Diverse with Your Photography”. It’s for pose ideas and inspiration. It’s pictures of colours and places and people. So what if there are no African American people. This is not by one photographer. Who cares. I’ve never taken a photograph of an oriental person because none have ever approached me to have their photos taken. I do not discriminate. Sheesh. Find something to do with your time other than complain. Be happy with what this page has given to you. Ideas are never worthless.

  23. Blah

I wouldn’t call these pictures outstanding. None of them really stood out except the ones of the cute little kids “fighting”. These pictures were all very vanilla.

  24. dee

great pics! and I agree. who says diversity is just skin color? idiots. i bet there are different religions of all kinds in these pictures. or different cultural backgrounds. or people that came from different economical backgrounds. skin color? oh, is that all we’re looking at? and yeah, they are all gonna dress up, match, and look their best – it’s picture day, an investment. All these “preppies” know the value of capturing special family moments, I guess. get real.

  25. Chanta

Im a little dissapointed. From reading the beginning, how this post wa supposed to be family portraits compiled from all around the world and there really is no DIVERSITY among them. Yes I see diversity is a hot topic and for those that are saying it doesn’t matter, it DOES! I come from a very mixed background, 15+ ethnicities. White, black, Asian, south American, whatever it is, I have family members of every race and color. If these image are to serve as inspiration to me and others, I wish there was more diversity among them. Many Americans nowadays are if not at least biracial, then multi-racial. It would have been nice to see photos that everyone can “relate” too. Not just one group of people. And they honestly are not the best poses, not the most natural looking. Next time you might want to search a little bit harder.

  26. nahid

This post is purely for inspiration! Just see the poses and dressing, why do you wish to see colors of people. This is our world and we stand by all humans in this world, I do not differentiate people with religion, colors, language and status. If you want your life to be beautiful then do not care what people tell, just clean hearts, love and respect everyone!

  27. Beth

Some people can be very hurtful. I’m white and think its hurtful to be called boring and a prep which I am of neither.

  28. Cindy

These are Great Pictures and Ideas ! For those of you who just have something negative to say, Guess What ! These pictures are NOT for YOU ! They are for the rest of us who appreciate other people giving us ideas. But, since you are sooo smart and don’t appreciate the ideas, why are you even looking at them, much less leaving a comment !

  29. Brittany

    Totally agree with beth here.

  30. Katy

I live in an area where most of my clientele is white. I very rarely get a person of darker color walking into my studio. I don’t have time to go “searching” for “diverse” clientele, but my clients are all very diverse in other areas of their lives. I am sure no one meant to hurt anyone’s feelings or probably even thought about the fact that there weren’t any darker skinned people in the pictures. Just because they are all white, doesn’t mean someone is trying to be racist. Someone could say that about my studio, but it is through no fault of my own. You are too easily offended. I also think it is rude to be racist against white people, such as myself. I happen to wish I had a dark skinned clientele. They photograph beautifully :) Trust me, we aren’t all racist, just because we have light skin. Deep breath, people!

  31. jane

even something as basic as a photograph idea post can be turned into a race issue?

it’s not about the color, it’s about what they are doing in the photo/posed/location.

    geez! get over it.

  32. Mariah

Wow, I am surprised by people. If these were done by a photographer who lived in a primarily Italian community I guess they would get hassled for a lack of diversity too.

I think you did a very nice job! I love the old barn. Park City??
Love the one on the blue background, nice color editing and clothing combo.

    Great job! Thanks for sharing.

  33. Patty

Bet if this was all black families there wouldn’t be one single complaint from the ones complaining! No asking where’s the white families!? Lol its funny how these things work…..

  34. Cat

Forget diversity! Where are the fat and ugly people? Because all of these families look like perfect feeakin’ models!

  35. Leslie

And what’s wrong with being white and straight? Really??!?

  36. Angie

Ya all are morons….there was an African American little girl in a picture. Open your eyes behind your closed minded mouths.

  37. nahid

    @Leslie exactly!

  38. Jenn

I LOVE THESE IDEAS!!! Diversity is wayyy over rated and there is no need to point out something like that in this amazing group of photos. Maybe more “diverse” families should get their picture taken. js.

  39. Kim

Considering white, straight people seem to be a minority these days I would say this is a wonderful post highlighting the minority population in America….

But seriously calm down folks. Being white does not make you just white. Just as with people of color there are a million backgrounds and ethnicities that go along with skin color. You have no idea who these people are and where they come from. I say shame on you for sterotyping. I clicked on a link to get some ideas for locations, colors and clothing for family pictures. That’s what the post is for and that is what is has accomplished. If you are looking a debate on diversity an article on nice pictures is not the place for you. Jeez Louise!

  40. Tosha

Love the inspiration I am the mother of 6 that range in age from 18-9 months old and needed family photo ideas that are not the ordinary mom and dad on stool kids gathered around! Thanks for the pics not to mention 4 lil boys that don’t sit still

  41. Shay

The pictures are all beautiful!!!!!!!!!…..But diversity is important when you are trying to appeal to ALL people. It is a relevant questio. It is not relevant to YOU, because its something you never deal with on a daily basis, therefore it’s not important to YOU. TOday’s America, that I see everyday is not only white. It’s causacian American, African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, Indian, and multi- racial. You guys kill me with “stop being sensitive”.

  42. Elizabeth

Wonderful ideas for pictures of big families, despite the ignorant comments by the haters of the world…. We have a total of 8(6kids) & I was glad to get new ideas for family pics!! Love the couple on the motorcycle & the kids standing a little bit away!!

  43. Nik

There would be no expectation of diversity except that the writer claimed this was a collection of the best photographs from around the world. Since most of them came from one photographer, I think that claim is a bit overstated. Nice shots indeed, but I think everyone would be more content of the writer said, “check out these great family portraits by Ashlee.”

  44. good sam

I thank God in Heaven for this free exchange of thoughts and ideas. Thank you, everyone, for using your God given free will. It really is a beautiful thing.

……..oh! Wow! did anyone see all these pictures up top?? Who knew?! ;)

  45. Kitsch

There are a few decent pictures in here, but so many are blown, out of focus, or over saturated and that’s too bad because the families are beautiful!

  46. catherine

Thx so much for your beautiful pics…..

  47. Lee from Pear Tree Space

These are fantastic examples of family photos. All of them so well-coordinated and cohesive without being matchy-matchy. And they each fit perfectly with their settings. There was a lot of thought put into them. Thanks for sharing!

  48. claire

    Note to article author:

    “its” author, not “it’s”

  49. Ed

How about a little diversity next time. I liked the pics but the only person brown skinned was a little baby adopted by an all white family.

  50. Yolan

Thanks for putting in at least two families who came together through adoption. I really appreciate that!
