Family photography: Family photographs are the best memoirs for a lifetime! If it’s anything that’s valued by time besides wine—it’s a family photograph! A family photograph freezes the most precious moments of our lives and gives us a chance to rediscover them at a later point. It’s for the same reason we should take utmost care while snapping the very precious moments—say, a growing kid, birthday, wedding, vacations, intimate moments so on and so forth. Personally being a connoisseur of photography, I collected some of the best family photographs from across the world. These could stand as a benchmark for your family photographs or provide you the cues of how an outstanding family photograph should be. So, here I present those outstanding family photographs—feast your eyes!

@Amy Yeah that we will update to every picture!

  2. Design Jobs

Hi Nahid, well done on finding these, most family portraits make me want to cringe but these are great examples of how to do it right.

  3. Angela

    Many thanks!!! (any monoparental familly?)

  4. Anonymous

The reason why there is no diversity is because most of these Photographers are Utah based photographers. There isn’t a huge amount of mixed race in Utah, let alone same sex-parents. Anywhere else in the world this wouldn’t be an issue.

  5. Debrah

Very WASP-y looking. While I do realize that not all the families showcased are white, the majority are. And while the colors and textures stand out, the themes are all similar and boring. There are a few great pictures here, love the one with the profiles of the heads. The rest look like they are out of a Tommy Hillfiger ad, full of wealthy nuclear families flaunting their money. The dynamics of most of these families feel forced and stiff. Showcase a little more creativity, some imagination, families truly having fun together. That is what makes a GREAT family portrait. I’m sorry, I truly don’t mean to hate. I sort of just stumbled upon this site by accident, and I don’t often find myself writing comments; but these pictures made me feel awkward inside.

  6. Coleen

Beautiful ideas for my own family portraits. Again most of these families/photographers are from Utah which means they are waspy, nuclear families that shouldn’t make you feel awkward but realize how others truly do live. That is what Utah looks like. Thanks again for these beautiful portraits of families.

  7. Jana

Are you accepting more family portraits to share? We found a great photographer that has a nice twist on the traditional picture.Happy to share.

  8. Cassie Lilly

I would love it if you had some Gay and Lesbian family portraits in this lineup. Its important for people to see the beauty in All Different kinds of Families. Even if they don’t agree with their lifestyle.

    Thanks.
    Cassie Lilly

  9. Family Stock Photos

All awesome examples… I love the one of the two kids being themselves, fighting with each other :P

  10. Tabatha

    Very helpful collection! Thanks.

  11. Summer

Some good ones for sure, but so many of them just look so mormon.

  12. Laura

I wish you had idea with a single parent and her two kids……Hmmmmm!

  13. Tracy

These are great ideas but I’m wondering why there are no people of color in your photographs. It would be great if you could post some pictures that showcase the wardrobe colors and options that would work with people who aren’t a similar shade of peach!

  14. Liz

All of the families and pictures are beautiful! I would have loved to see more diversity.

  15. Kristen

    Interesting collection…diversity?

  16. Brandy Paulk

why can’t people just appreciate the the inspiring portraits and poses not focus on the race of the people… Create the “diversity” in your own shots! gosh…

  17. nahid

@Brandy that is exactly what I meant

  18. Misty

Why does a person have to be considered a “wealthy nuclear family” just to have a nice picture taken? Cost does not correlate with outcome, in my opinion. I’m, in fact, a lesbian of ‘diverse color’ and I still appreciate this collection for what it is: examples of outstanding family photographs. I found every single one of them to be inspiring. Use it as a spring-board, folks, not the gospel. If you’d rather see X-picture of a single-parent family with fifteen biracial kids, then close your eyes and picture it.

A nice collection, I think. The use of color in some of them is fantastic. And I like how unexpected backgrounds are thrown in and really make a killer impact on the picture as a whole.

  19. nahid

    @Misty Thanks

  20. Amanda

Wow this seems amazing collection of family photography. Thank you so much! I now have ideas for my next family photograph…!

  21. Jose smith

Very beautiful ideas. Just love all the poses!

  22. nahid

Thank you! Do check out other posts as well.

  23. Beth

I am glad there are no gay families on here. That would be disgusting!

  24. Jessica

Umm…I guess I’m not familiar with the term “wasp-y” I think these are a great collection of family poses showcasing how to wear color to enhance your background and can work no matter the race or sexual orientation of the family you are photographing! So silly that every one feels the need to put a politically correct spin on everything. What does a gay family picture look like anyway? Does everybody lean to the left or wear exceptional bright clothes (said very sarcastically) Or for that matter a minority family’s picture. So silly!

  25. nahid

    @Jessica, thanks!

  26. Kristine

These photos are just so good, I am planning to have a family wall in my house where I have started taking family pictures. These are amazing poses you have!

Also in other posts as well.

  27. Robert

Fantastic collection of family photographs and these pictures make me realize how important our family is.

  28. Jess

These are gorgeous. Have a look at my best friend’s photography at wildcloverphotography.com, or on FB. Their family photos are to die for. They’re located in VT.

  29. nahid

@ Jess thank you so much for the links.

  30. SF

Overall very pleasing images. Most have good lighting, some have great depth of field, most have pleasing backgrounds and almost all have fantastic posing. This is just showing you some of the best….are there better than shown here….yes. Is there diversity elsewhere? Absolutely and if you want to see it keep surfing!

    Thank you putting this together.

  31. Stephanie

I always think it is odd that people think that leaving negative comments encourages acceptance and diversity. Why be so negative? These are REAL families and real photographs. Should they apologize for that? I think these are great pictures and ideas, whether you are an ethnically diverse family or not. Also, a couple of the black and white pictures have people of different races–although I was raised to think of people as people and not specific races. Take this for what it is–ideas. Insert your own family and you’ll get a beautiful effect.

  32. socalgal619

I guess hispanics, asians and african americans don’t take good family pictures? They’re all caucasian. Shame on you. SMH

  33. JanelleRenee

Need some ideas for parents with a teen.

  34. Kaitlin

Thank you for the lovely post, Nahid! And don’t worry about the haters, people can find injustice and outrage in anything, even just a batch of nice family pictures. There are a lot of great ideas for poses and color schemes in here, I’ll definitely be looking back at this for inspiration (yes, even for my multi-racial family shoots ;)

  35. nahid

    @Kaitlin thank you so much

  36. Barrie Wedding Photographer

Love these shots thanks so much for sharing! Picked up some great ideas for this weekend :)

  37. nahid

    That’s great.

  38. Drea

Whatever happened to the importance of being positive and encouraging?

I was really questioning whether I should post or not, mainly because this is random that I even ended up on this site.
I am NO photographer but alas, my opinion shall be expressed.
Kudos, to everyone who has a picture on here.
We all know the world isn’t in need of another photographer BUT that should not stop ANYONE from doing what makes them happy, whether they are the world’s greatest or not.
Sadly, there will ALWAYS be haters, and frankly, we need them.
Families are a beautiful thing, no matter what qualifies them as a family.
I am sure no one maliciously or had intentions of not including other examples of what a family is.

  39. nahid

@Drea Thank you so much. These pictures show various poses, locations and clothes…THATS IT

  40. Madelyne

Thanks for posting these! Gave me some great inspiration for the family portraits I took the other day.

  41. Emma

Love all the colors and textures used. Gave me lots of good ideas on how to dress my own family.

  42. nahid

    @Emma. Thats cool

  43. Maisi

Love all the ideas. Beautiful family portraits!! The poses and clothing are all great.

  44. Tricia

I don’t understand the need for controversy when there isn’t any UNLESS YOU LOOK FOR IT. It isn’t meant to stir any feelings other than creativity. I may be simple-minded but when I look at these images, my first thought is WOW – I can’t wait to recreate these with my clients and my own family – it CERTAINLY isn’t WOW – how can I get mad and offended by something that was meant to help….

  45. Michelle

Thanks for sharing these great pictures! We are a family of 7 and I struggle every year to come up with something fun and semi -original where we don’t clash but aren’t “matchy match”! It’s a tough charge! I appreciate the inspiration here! Not a photog, just a mom of 5 trying to work on some ideas!!

  46. Laura

Wow. So white. And so straight. I’m surprised to see virtually no diversity.

  47. Lori

    Diversity is over rated.

  48. Peter Harper

I love these family picture. They become so valuable over time. On http://www.familygallery.com you will find another very original way of displaying your family. Take the time to have a look, it’s worth it.

  49. Ludmila Spivak

Each family smiling from the picture making me happy and warming the heart.
It is so lovely to be a part of a big family, where lots of love, care and joy.
So great all pictures!!! Thank you for sharing.

  50. Lea

I agree with Laura. These are nice photographs and all but it just looks like the same white preppy family over and over. Doesn’t really stimulate the imagination :/
