Taj Mahal – one of the wonders of the world was built by the Mughal emperor Shahjahan in loving memory of his wife Mumtaz mahal.The Taj mahal is considered to be one of the finest constructions using white marble and semi precious stones in Mughal architecture. It has the combination of Persian, Turkish, Mughal and Indian art fused in the architecture.Taj mahal is built on the banks of the river Yamuna and the magnificent architecture is visible from any corner of the city. The construction of the Taj mahal took 22 years and it houses the tomb of the Mughal emperor’s wife.The construction of the Taj mahal is unique with its dome shaped structure at the top centre surrounded by four small domes called the chattris placed on four corners. The foundation is a huge, many chambered entrance with four archways stacked on either side. The structure is surrounded by four minarets on the outside which are 40 meters high. The carvings and designs on the archways are identical and symmetrical on either side of the entrance. The dome and chattri have a metal finial on top with a moon symbol pointing towards the sky. The four minarets are divided into three parts and on top is a balcony with a chattri having the same design as that inscribed on the tomb. Islamic scripturesfrom the Koran are engraved on the inside and outside the structure as decoration.The workmanship of the laborers’is really to be appreciated who have created a unique master piece.
